A bit about us

...and why we're building again


Having not been sufficiently deterred from our first project on St. John with the building of the "Arc du Soleil" back in 2005-07, we are well rested and ready for some more time in the ring ("taking a beating" reference is intentional). Our motto is "we do it right because we do it twice"!  Actually, we are not building the same house over again. To the contrary, in the infamous words of Monty Python, "And Now For Something Completely Different".  Well, to be fair, there will be three elements making an encore; the native island stone, polished concrete floors and the expansive openings bringing the outside, in, for the ultimate "open concept". This one will feature a smaller main house with a detached guest cottage.  The style will be Modern, with a generous use of the native stone that we love, vertical ribbon windows, wide openings with multi-slide pocketed glass doors, expansive tropical hardwood decks and a small pool for each.  We like to think of it as "Bauhaus on the Caribbean " design.

The new lot... 459 Chocolate Hole

Here's the spot... a birds eye view. Nestled in that green space on Rock Ridge Road.

The Lot

Located on Rock Ridge road, at (you guessed it) 459 Chocolate Hole, you'll come across some unassuming wooden stairs placed by the previous owners so that potential buyers could get up on the lot to appreciate the westerly views. After having cleared some of the bush, you can begin to get an idea of the potential this lot has for some great Caribbean Sea and Sunset views. Starting from the south, overlooking Hart & Chocolate Hole Bay, panning west to Dog Island, Little St. James, French Cap, Big St. James, East End of St. Thomas and just a hint of the North Shore of St. Thomas, the view is expansive.
The rectangular shape, and lateral orientation with approximately 200 feet of road frontage, was ideal for our project of having a main house with detached cottage, with enough privacy between the two, so that they felt like two separate properties. Additionally, this is an established neighborhood, that is very quaint and quiet, with "almost end of the road privacy".

Here's the Plan

Here we are with our good friends Paul & Diane reviewing plans for the new building project. Paul is the engineer for our design team. In addition to having his engineer's license here in the VI, Paul also happens to be one of the top Forensic Engineers in the US; i.e.: when a building or bridge collapses, he is the guy they call to tell them why it collapsed and how to avoid that in the future (good guy to have on the team!) In case you're wondering this meeting was during a Sunday brunch :)

Lignum Vitae Tree

Lignum vitae (tree of life or wood of life) Listed as "Endangered" by IUCN (The World Conservation Union)

When we had our topographical survey done there was a large tree marked as "unknown". Taking a closer look we thought it might be a Lignum Vitae. We took some pics and emailed to the St. John tree expert, Eleanor Gibney. She emailed back, with great excitment... "yes!" and asked it she could come by to see it. Here she is and I was thrilled to have her make the visit. When you have your most favorite tree (and a 200 year old one, at that), you know you have picked the perfect lot. With a few adjustments to the plans, our 'Tree of Life" will fit in nicely.
